A Word from Josh: This was a very unique gig... and I mean that in a good way... for the most part. I mean, we did have to arrive at the venue at 6 in the morning to set up (about a half-hour before the sun); very counter-intuitive for a rock band. Plus, at that hour in mid-October it's pretty cold in Wisconsin (mid-30s which admittedly is not as cold as it could have been). So we began our day's work in cold and dark conditions but our spirits were high because we knew it would only get better from there. Overall, as sports fans, we were excited to be doing this gig. The stage was on the "Engineering Mall" just northeast of Camp Randall Stadium. Our first set started at 8:30 am in front of a few dozen people and it was a challenge to make our chilled fingers work correctly on our instruments. When we finished the set 45 minutes later a lot more people had arrived and the sun was finally starting to shine directly on the stage. The break was very exciting as members of the UW Marching Band took the stage and cheerleaders performed amongst the crowd along with Bucky Badger. Following that, the UW men's basketball team was brought up on stage. Standing near them was interesting as half of them are taller than me and I felt... abnormally normal. Our second set was a complete blast as a couple thousand people were now watching and the sun-drenched air had warmed up considerably. The first song of the set was the keyboard-heavy "Foreplay/Long Time" by Boston which effectively served to thaw out my fingers once and for all. Once again it was Charles Thomas who did an amazing job filling in for the injured John Swenson on lead vocals. It's really too bad John couldn't be a part of this show because he is probably the biggest Badger football fan in the band. That's just one of many reasons we hope to do this again next year. The show ended at 10:45 to allow ticket-holders to enter the stadium in time for the 11:00 kick-off against the Purdue Boilermakers. The Badgers went on to win the game 24-7. --Josh Were you at this show? Would you like to comment on it? Debbie: "Great show, had a blast!!!" |
