"A Slice of the Pie" • Ripon Summer Concert Series • August 7, 2015

Posted by Cherry Pie

A Word from Josh:
We enjoyed our visit to the Ripon Summer Concert Series last year and were delighted to be invited back. The event staff were wonderful and determined to have another successful show. Mother Nature had different ideas. Patches of heavy rain were forecast off and on all day. The stage is in a small gazebo-like structure, but nothing else is covered. We got the equipment set up and ready to go while monitoring the weather radar on our phones. It predicted that the worst rain would come right at 7 o'clock, which happened to be our scheduled start time, so we figured it would be best to wait for the storm to pass before beginning the show. 7 o'clock came and went and it was still relatively dry for the moment. Meanwhile, a few dozen people had gathered in folding chairs in front of the stage in anticipation of the concert. By 7:10 it seemed awkward to postpone the start of the show any further as long as the rain hadn't started yet. So we took the stage and launched into "You Give Love a Bad Name". About midway through the song, to the surprise of absolutely no one, the heavens opened and soaked the park with an abundance life-giving water. We finished the song as attendees fled for cover. We quickly covered our stage gear with tarps to protect it from the driving rain being blown into the shelter. As predicted, the worst weather lasted only a few minutes and we were able to resume the show at 8 o'clock, playing nonstop until the strict curfew time of 10 o'clock with no further threats of rain. Under the circumstances it was quite remarkable that so many people joined us for the show, many of them standing in a quagmire of mud in front of the stage. Having endured the challenge of the weather and emerged in good shape, our mood was light and the show was very enjoyable for both us and the audience. John, as is often the case, got downright silly which, among other consequences, led him to solicit requests from the audience which resulted in our impromptu performance of Tesla's "Love Song". Much thanks go out to everybody who weathered the storm with us and contributed to, what turned out to be, a very fun show. Extra thanks go out to our crew Matt and Johanne who were the real heroes of the day with the way they dealt with the weather.    -Josh
