"A Slice of the Pie" • New Glarus Firefest • August 1, 2015

A Word from Josh:
The more things stay the same, the more they change. This was our fifth consecutive annual performance at this event and many things about it have remained consistent... the firehouse, the afternoon band around the corner, the food, John's Mom in attendance and most of the firemen themselves. Then, of course, there are certain details that change from year to year... I'm pretty sure the stage was a little different this year, perhaps a bit smaller? Some years they serve a steak dinner, this year it was barbeque chicken. And, of course, the people in the audience aren't ALL the same people every year. But even when they are, they are changing, some more than others. John doesn't have any children of his own (or at least none that have tracked down his home address) but he does have many nieces and other relatives who live in this part of the state. Their presence in the front row has been a consistent part of these New Glarus shows; the fact that they are all now adults has not. Well, life happens, what are you gonna do? The weather tonight was clear, but rather warm. The heat seemed to keep some people from actually entering the building early in the night, they were content to watch and listen from outside where the evening air was a bit fresher. Eventually, the place was packed and rocking hard like a typical Pie show. One unusual thing happened during the second set when a woman approached the stage and requested to hear the song "Ah Leah" by Donnie Iris. I explained the best I could from the stage that we don't do that song any more. She said, "What if I pay you $50 to play it?" I guess I responded with a stupid face that indicated, "Hmmmm, I suppose we could" although deep inside I was justifiably worried that this could be a really bad idea. She tossed the cash onto the stage and they next thing you know we were playing "Ah Leah." I must admit we played it far better than I expected, so I guess you could say we landed on our feet. Such is the excitement of a live Pie show sometimes... bad decisions that turn out OK in the end. Maybe we could describe our entire career that way. A big thanks to the New Glarus Fire Department for facilitating another good time for us and our friends, families and fans and to everybody who has helped things turn out OK in the end for us over all these years.    -Josh
