A Word from Josh: This was different. Not bad, just different. We were hired to cap of the first day of a two-day real estate convention with a Sunday night party dubbed "Rock the House." Get it?... cuz they're rockin'... and they sell houses... yeah! Our show took place in the large room in the conference center at the Kalahari resort. Dave took advantage of the scenario by coming up a day early with his family to enjoy the indoor water park. Convention activities took place in various parts of the building throughout the day, including a big presentation by some important-looking guy on the stage we were to play on. That session wrapped up a little after 6:00 pm. The room was cleared and we began bringing our equipment in, including the full PA and lighting system for a show which was to begin with a one-man opening act at 8:30. This was a much tighter window for set-up than we are accustomed to. So we busted ass and moved everything into place as quickly as we could in a true team effort. We surprised ourselves with our own efficiency and, with no notable technical issues to slow us down, we were sound-checked and ready to rock in plenty of time. Attendees began making their way back into the room as the opening act started his 30-minute set. He was an impressive singer/guitarist from Minnesota named Jeff Loven who played lively versions of 80s Rock tunes accompanied by backing tracks. Our first set was greeted with polite appreciation from a crowd that slowly grew over a long period of time. We hadn't played a show in more than two weeks. We put that "down time" to good use by rehearsing new material (well, new to us) and a few songs we hadn't played in quite a while. It's always pretty exciting to change things up like that. Anyway, during the break we really had no idea of what to expect when we returned to the stage for our second set. I figured the audience would either turn in early to be bright-eyed for tomorrow's conference activities OR they could let loose with a torrent of reckless hedonism heretofore repressed by their real estate demeanors. Well, let's not forget that The Pie was in the house, so guess which path most of them chose. Yeah, our second set was a typical Cherry Pie hootenanny with fun for everybody including ourselves. At one point a bookish-looking gentleman in a button-down office shirt and khaki pants posed in front of the stage near Dave with a large inflatable toy guitar and rocked out with vein-popping enthusiasm normally reserved for Superbowl-winning touchdown celebrations. To me, it served as a reminder that a lot of people in this world fantasize about being able to do what we do. That's something good to keep in perspective. --Josh Were you at this show? Would you like to comment on it? Jennie: "You guys were awesome as always... Way to get us tight laced Realtors loosened up!!" |
