I remember in high school history class learning about how during early battles of the American Civil War, upper class families from the cities would go to the hills above battlefields with picnic baskets and leisurely watch the carnage below. That's a little how it felt during the first set of this show as a huge empty void separated the stage from dozens of party-goers relaxing on blankets and folding chairs, many with a brat in one hand and a beer in the other. The gig took place as part of a summer party in the backyard of a private home and was the first show in the band's history that was not open to the public. The crowd consisted of about 200 invited guests of the host Jim who was footing the bill for the entire event. All of the nearby neighbors were invited and most of them attended, although one chose instead to call the police to file a noise complaint. Hey, you can't please everybody. As a party, it was pretty nice; a bunch of nice folks, a beautiful setting and a lot of great food & drink. But, obviously, as a Cherry Pie show, it lacked that certain vibe that comes from our "regular" crowd rocking out up against the stage. The second set did get more fun as the sun went down and the alcohol began to kick in. Leading the party train was Jim's wife Donna whose spirited dancing and antics set the tone for others to follow. Overall, it was a pleasant night and we appreciated the hospitality. But we are really looking forward to regaining our "Pie Mojo" (with your help of course) this Wednesday night at the State Fairgrounds for a show that WILL BE open to the public. 'See ya there. --Josh
