| A Word from Josh: Once again we found ourselves taking on the task of making music following a week dominated by a human tragedy of unfathomable magnitude on American soil that played out on TV. Our Navy friend Colleen is stationed down in Gulfport, Mississippi just a few miles east of New Orleans. She's been working hard with her unit to dry out, fix up their base and help out the community. It's at times like these that we feel lucky to be able to put on a rock show. But, indeed, I can think of no better way to celebrate the fact that life goes on. Sure, it looks like the world may end soon, but as long as it hasn't we will continue to do our part to help make life worth living in these troubled times. This show was actually a part of a three-day event billed as Kelly's "Rockfest" which included The Toys on Friday and Rhythm Method on Saturday. Our show was preceded by a very impressive 2-hour set by the hip-hop band Off Tha Hook. At one point, their guitarist broke a string and didn't have back-up instrument, so I let him play one of my guitars for the last few songs. By the time we hit the stage it was almost 11:00 pm and the crowd was totally ready to explode. This made for a very exciting show, much more so than many of the outdoor festival shows we played this year. But Kelly's II has always been good for that high-energy, arena rock feel. Unfortunately, our show didn't run as long as usual. Not only did it start later but, being a Sunday, we also had to finish sooner despite it being a holiday weekend. Exactly how much sooner wasn't made clear until we were heading back on stage for our second set which ended up being cut very short. Despite a great night with all the fun you've come to expect from Cherry Pie, it just didn't seem quite complete without some of our "staple" songs like "Wanted Dead or Alive", "Nothin' but a Good Time" or "Hot for Teacher". We did manage to pull out a couple of surprises for the encore, playing Tesla's "Gettin' Better" for the first time in almost five years and Skid Row's "Piece of Me" for the first time ever. The hot crowd seemed to agree that it was a great high-intensity way to end a great night. --Josh Were you at this show? Would you like to comment on it? Mel & Mandy: "Cherry Pie is officially our favorite local band; others pale in comparison. Great job at Kelly's! *cheers*" Bittersweeteus: "You can always tell when summer is near the end and fall is about to begin, by the pre-season Packer games and CherryPie has more indoor gigs. As the prior band, Off tha Hook, was taking their gear off the stage, the CP guys were preparing themselves for a night of unconstrained fun. Just like the Packers work together to form a great team, the CP guys played together with each one adding their own instrumental and vocalized skills to make a great hard-rockn' group. And just like it takes a good quarterback to lead his team to a scoring touchdown, John has the same initiative and perserverance, which was proved by wearing his Slayer shirt, to lead the group into a performance that kept the fans coming back for more. It was good to see CherryPie at Kelly's for another impressive night and show!" Jewelz: "Well it's been a few weeks since I've seen the pie and all my cp friends so last minute I decided come out and play - yes even though I was sportin a few stiches in the head I made it out and danced the night away with a great group (My sexy dance partner Jody, Lonnie, Christ, Amanda, Jeannie, Greg, Dawn, Stef, & FL Dawn) As always a great evening with wonderful friends and of course cp rocked Kelly's as always." |
