| A Word from Josh: First I must say that Luther's Blues is a spectacular venue with a great stage, a high ceiling and great audience vantage points. This was our first time here and we managed to draw a respectable crowd, although not overwhelming. At first, one might assume this was because we played at the Badger Bowl last night which is only three miles away. But I don't think that made much of a difference. In fact, a vast majority of the crowd of about 300 seemed to be our usual Madison fans venturing in from the suburbs, a great many of whom were at the Badger Bowl last night. Luther's Blues is located on the UW campus near downtown but it was apparent that no attempt had been made to draw the local population's attention to this show (they had not even put up our posters in the club). After the show however, the evidently impressed bar staff were singing a much more conciliatory tune, saying that we were sure to quickly win over the local youth demographic and insisting that they will spread the word for our next Luther's appearance. Well, I suppose that we still sometimes have to earn our respect the hard way. Actually, the whole atmosphere after the show was quite festive with a great many people mingling and sharing pizza and drinks. We do certainly look forward to returning. As for the show itself, the large stage seemed custom made for our type of performance and I think the show went pretty darn great. We presented ourselves with energy and personality and the lights looked awesome. As we promised to the members of the crowd who were seeing us for the second night in a row, we drastically changed the set list from the previous night. 12 of the show's first 15 songs had not been played the night before and we brought back a few songs that we hadn't played at all in several months including "In My Dreams", "Faithfully" and "Breaking the Law". Playing those songs again felt great. However, the show did contain one moment of folly that I'm sure we'll be looking back at with laughter for many years to come (although I didn't think it was very funny at the time). At the end of "Talk Dirty to Me" we set off two of our traditional confetti canons. One of them, for some reason, was aimed right above my guitar pedals. As a result, a hard projectile from the canon struck me square in the back of the head knocking me to the floor before I even knew what had happened. Damn, that really hurt! It took me a few moments to get back to my feet, clear the cobwebs and continue with the show. John did not see what had happened and was wondering why I wasn't starting my acoustic guitar solo. I went on to play the next few songs in a mild state of shock, but eventually got back to normal and had a great time the rest of the night. In retrospect, it shouldn't have been too surprising that something like that might happen. After all, this was the first stage we've ever playing that was located right next to a grassy knoll. --Josh Were you at this show? Would you like to comment on it? ROCKIN REED: "Hands down the greatest Cherry Pie show ever!! CP rocked the blues right out of the place! There was a tremendous energy from the boys and the fans. You have to play at Luthers again and next time the place will be packed. CP is high five in 05. Keep Rockin!!!!!!!!!!!!" KAT: "On Thursday a few of us went to see Larry The Cable Guy and i laughed so hard my ribs hurt..........but nothing can compare to seeing Josh fall down like a "Big ole Oak Tree" us girls were up front dancing and doing the usual routine to "Talk Dirty" so most eyes were on Shane, but i just happened to be looking over in Josh's direction and BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it looked like he had been struck by lightening!!!!! next thing ya know he's on the ground with his legs in the air and trying to get upback on his feet again all while not setting his guitar down. I thought wow new venue maybe Josh is trying some new theatrics to add something new to the show.We have it on video we'll be selling copies for $20 (just kidding) Very cool club, awesome staff and downstairs they make the best burgers i've ever had in my life!!!!!" Rich M: "Shame on Luthers for not promoting what was truly a great combination of music, venue and showmanship! (Not even a line in their weekly quarter-page ad in the Isthmus, though I did hear some announcements on WORT.) Those that did come out witnessed an arena-style show with more action, confetti-technics, lights, and effects than possible at other Madison venues. There may have been less people on the dance floor then was hoped for, but the guys still performed as if the house was packed with 1000 screaming fans. Tonight Cherry Pie was too huge to view with the human eye, as Johnny worked all the open spaces on stage, Rod and Monstro took their turns up front, Chet played more music than could fit through his amp, and Rico thundered fills and solos that I could feel in my chest (the elevated stage aimed his barrage right at us). The sets were hot - Fastway was a treat, as was the triple dose of Dokken. The arrangement of songs kept the energy building through a solid second set and a screaming encore. I especially noticed how the guys traded looks, hooks, and jokes throughout the show. They’re having fun doing what they do so well and the audience can’t help but pick up on it. Johnny and Rod, ever friendly and accessible, spent their set break visiting with friends and fans in the bar. Thanks for a great show when we all were still feeling the effects of the previous night. They’ll surely be cleaning confetti and streamers out of the rafters for weeks to come." Bittersweeteus: "This was definitely a nice place. From the stage to the bar, it had a somewhat classy look. The night started out slow, til John requested more people up to the dance floor and then you couldn't pry them away from it. The CP guys were very high-spirited and they performed every song with the gusto and fiber of their very souls. John was looking good and full of spunk that kept everyone in a partying mood. Even though this was a new place for the guys to perform at, they still proved once again that they are the Best cover band in Madison and in the Milwaukee area!!!!!" |
