A Word from Josh: Anyone who lived in Madison in the 80s knows that the best "mid-sized" venue for rock music back then was "Headliners". They had live music almost every night. Bands ranging from local heroes to national touring acts like Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, Billy Squire, Vixen, Megadeth, Soundgarden and countless others played there in the club's heyday. The place could hold over 1000 people, all with a great view of the large corner stage. Unfortunately, in the 90s the room stopped booking live music and thrived under the name Bullwinkle's as a trendy college dance club/meat market. What a waste of a great old stage! Anyway, the room is now called Club Amazon and we had the honor of being one of 4 bands to play there this summer. Although the walls and bar have been redecorated a number of times over the years and the upper level has been converted into a food court, the stage remained relatively unchanged, as evident by the inch of dust on the light rigging overhead. Also, the dressing room behind the stage still retains the old seedy ambiance I remember from playing there long ago. (Man, if those walls could talk!) The success of our show was never really in doubt. Not only has our popularity grown tremendously in the Madison area, but we were also given a lot of radio support from 105.1 FM The Buzz. The result was a crowd of almost 500 people sharing a rockin' good time with us. Dancing, singing along, throwing bras at us... this crowd had it all. In return, we gave them a show that included three new songs for us, all of which were well-received. John was in excellent form has he took the lead in entertaining the throngs of people packed in front of the stage. Personally, I loved playing on this grand old stage in front of many friends including Julie Hoffman, Stephanie Roix, Kase Villand, Bobby Duncanson, Dana Lamb, Lisa Axon, Jessy Lee, Brandi, Jody (from Iowa), Lonnie Stinewal, Chris Stinewal, Raven Murray and Suzie Pieper. Many other non-familiar or semi-familiar faces also helped make the night very memorable as we were accosted, both on stage and off, by fans old and new. As I understand it, the management at Club Amazon has not yet decided whether to continue having live music in the Fall. I sure hope they do. - Josh |
