This was another outdoor festival and, like Summerfest, we worried throughout the afternoon about the threatening whether. Also like Summerfest, the skies had cleared when it came time to play. The show ran from 8:00 to Midnight, making it a "Twilight" show, beginning in daylight and gradually growing darker as the stage lights slowly grew more and more vibrant adding an extra dynamic to the evening. Another special thing about the gig on a more personal level involved Kevin Konchan, one of my young guitar students. By sheer coincidence, Kevin and his parents Fred and Mary maintain a large boat which is kept at the marina where this event was taking place. In fact, it's docked on a pier only a few yards from the stage. John and I accepted their invitation to hang out on the boat before the show where they provided "rock star" style hospitality. Later, this treatment continued as Kevin served as my personal roadie throughout the show. Toward the end, his efforts were rewarded when Shane brought him out on stage to play bass with us where he made the most of the moment. Overall, the crowd was a few hundred strong and included Barb Prueher, Shelly Korlesky, Karen Fleck, Scott "Rock" Aney (who came up on stage and sang part of "In My Dreams"), Connie Aney, Ann "Red", Stacy Hackl, Sheila Tate, Maribeth Luedtke, Erika Kaegler, Nikki Schmitz, Vic Manchester, Susan Schudiske, Mam Meyer, Sue Swanke and Cheryl Swanke. During our first set there were many young children near the stage. Seeing them dance to our music was absolutely adorable. Gradually, however, as the hour grew later the bopping toddlers were replaced by headbanging party animals. The crowd's intensity kept building right to the final note. -Josh |
