Faces in the Crowd |
We came into this show having not played out in over a month. Also, I hate to admit it, but we didn't rehearse either :-0 Nick works for his family's fireworks company and has been understandably very busy lately. Some of us also bought new equipment during the time off and were using it tonight for the first time. All of these factors combined to give us a lot to worry about as we prepared to play this room for the first time. Well, things turned out pretty well. The new gear worked OK (for the most part), we didn't suck (at least not as bad as that last "Illusion's" show, ouch!) and, most importantly, we had a respectable crowd which responded well to what we had to offer. Of course, several of our regular fans traveled to see us, which was very nice. Among them were Barb Prueher, Cheryl Mehlbrech, Ann Mehlbrech, Lisa Kelm and Kelly McClure. Another Cherry Pie regular Maribeth Luedtke had something up her sleeve as the band helped her present a surprise birthday cake to her good friend Erika Kaegler during the second set. Erika, who is normally quite shy, seemed to get a big kick out of the attention as John sang "Happy Birthday" to her as part of the show. Some of our more "recently acquired" fans came out too including Debbie "Ice Angel" (along with some of her Yahoo chat buddies) and Sue Swanke (who also brought of few friends). A couple of Cherry Pie "First Timers" that I talked to were Mary who is a sergeant in the Army and her friend Bobbi. Others in the crowd included Kevin Weihs, Mam Meyer, Jodi Bonderud and Stephanie Sceitt. Paul who plays bass for the Ozzy tribute band Blizzard of Oz got into the show, literally, as he came up and played bass on an improvised version of the old Black Sabbath tune "Paranoid". We really don't know that one too well, but we've winged it before. John said that if this keeps up he'll have to learn the words some day. As it was, his impromptu mumblings seemed to do just fine. -Josh |
