Band on Stage |
Faces in the Crowd |
A Word from Josh: It's funny how some gigs offer a certain symmetry. In this case our day started with a flat tire and then ended with another flat tire. This was an all-day event, the first band starting at 3:00 PM, so the light and sound crews were on their way to the site before noon. That's when the sound company truck suffered a flat tire. Not to worry as sound tech Brian Ingwell, who is quite a big man, took his shirt off and carried the truck the rest of the way. As festivals go, DEANSTOCK is not exactly Woodstock. In fact, it's more like a regular bar gig held outside and with a dunk tank. We played this event last year and heavy rains turned the dance area into a mud pit. Well, this time the weather was Perrrrrr-fect. The first band Bob Rocks features my good friend Bobby Duncanson on lead vocals. The second band Buzz Toyz rocked the growing crowd into the early evening. Our first set was "twi-light" show, starting in daylight and quickly turning to an exciting night event. I love that. The change of scenery adds to the variety of the show. Our technical problems were not done however. Our light crew had set up two video screens on either side of the stage, but one of the projectors broke before we hit the stage. But the most devastating technical problem of the night had to be the malfunction of the high F# on my Korg Triton. OK, "devastating" might not be the right word, but it sure made the main riff of "Separate Ways" sound funny. One fun part of the night involved the Bachelorette party of our friend Brandi. Of course, we helped make the most of it by embarrassing her relentlessly on stage during the second set (not particularly hard to do in this case). Vibes were good as we finished the show under a beautiful starry sky with time left to enjoy a burger and some naughty cake with friends. But, as I alluded to earlier, the night ended with another flat tire. This time Nick's pick-up truck was the victim as it tried to exit the backstage area. We just didn't want to leave. - Josh |
