A Word from Josh:
In the past we've said a lot about what a trooper John is. When you think about it, he has to put up with a lot of stuff that the rest of us in the band don't have to face. He's always right up front which means he is shouldered with the lion's share of responsibility for dealing with a crowd. When he splits his pants on stage, EVERYBODY sees it! He's the one who get caught on fire! And, he's the only band member who's musical instrument is his own body. That means that when he gets sick, it affects his ability to perform much more than it does for the rest of us. That's what he was dealing with today. He's dealing with a major bout of allergy induced laryngitis, and what is a singer without a voice?... just a long-haired freak in tight pants, I suppose. Anyway, we were brainstorming all day about how to deal with this problem. The first step was to find an opening act who could entertain the crowd while lessening the amount of time that John would have to sing. We really lucked out by landing King Kong on short notice. These guys really kick ass, playing a wide variety of cover material ranging from Prince to Foo Fighters to Lit to Cindy Lauper to BOC to Steve Miller all in their own charismatic hard rockin' style. We really appreciate them coming in and playing and excellent set that went over great with the crowd. Another hero of the day turned out to be John Griffith of the band Wall$treet. He showed up expecting to be a face in the crowd, but after he paid the cover charge we descended on him and asked if he would like to sing a couple of songs with us. He knows a lot of these tunes and ended up singing four of them which really helped give Johnny Spandex the breaks he needed to keep going. John Griffith did a great job, which included gyrating his massively toned body to the delight of the crowd. So, special thanks go out to him. Still, with all this help, Johnny Spandex still had to do a lot of singing. This was not easy, but as usual he gave his all and poured everything he had into his performance. The good news is that all this seemed to add up to make a successful show. 300 people responded really well to everything we had to offer. The bad news is that John ended up in much worse shape than he started in. Within two hours after the show, it was obvious that we would have to cancel tomorrow's show in Green Bay. As I type this, John is at the doctor being treated for major throat inflammation including blood in his phlegm (OK, maybe more than you needed to know). He cannot speak at all. We share the disappointment with many friends in northeastern Wisconsin (this was to be our first Green Bay show in over a year) but that does not take away from the fact that, as I said earlier, John is a real trooper. Although, on the surface, our show at Nick's may have seemed like a bit less than what we usually offer, I cannot think of another show that had more effort put into it.      - Josh
