A Word from John: March 30th marked our return to the stage, finally. We had to take a little time off in March to allow Dave and his wife Shandra some time to prepare for the arrival of their second child. And as most of you know the were blessed with a healthy baby boy named Nicolas Edward. Where in the heck did this name "Edward' come from? My name is Johnny, not Edward. But anyway our congratulations go out to both of them along with our best wishes. So with a new member of the Cherry Pie family in the world and sensing another kick-ass night in Madison, we were ready to explode. But to our surprise it was the crowd on hand that was ready to party down. This was without a doubt our finest turnout at the Badger Bowl yet. Yes there was some rust to knock off and yes , a mistake was made here and there, but nothing was going to stop us on this night. We had birthday celebrations going on, an engagement celebration going on and to of my nieces, Ally and Hanna Swenson, got to see their ol' Uncle John doing what he does best, acting like a damn fool, oh, and a little singing too. And the rest of the band blew people away from the first song to the last. You really couldn't tell that we haven't hardly seen each other for three weeks and six days. Although to me It seemed more like four weeks and two days. Some of the other familiar faces in the crowd included Diane Spray, Lori Helvey, Walter Cullen, Sandy Cullen, Judy, Becky Anderson, Mike Radke, Lora Lange, Dave Shanklin, DeEtte Shanklin, Stuart Smith, Jason Becker, Cirsten Paine, Linda Breitenfeld, Rick Brietenfeld, Lisa Axon, Eric Franco, Sandy Franco, Jennifer Cupp, Rod Cupp, Leann Setz, Tonjia McCallister, Chad Griepentrog and Birthday Girl Tanya Pisarek. There were also many fellow musicians in the crowd including Jason Phelps of Rock Bottom and Munky Punch, Al Pisarek of Mission Blue, Dave Cobb of Cobz Web and "Raven" Murray of Nightmare's End. During "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" I got Johnny Danger of WJJO 94.1 FM to sing along. I spoke with many new faces as well, and I asked them how they heard of us. Almost all of them said that a friend of theirs had recommended us as a "must see" band and all of them were so happy to see a band bring back the songs that they grew up with and partied to. And Cherry Pie fans know how to party! According to the management of the Badger Bowl, the Cherry Pie crowd is on of the hardest drinking crowds that they can remember. So much that next time we are in town they are hiring on extra bartenders to keep up with you crazy people. So I raise my beer stein to you, Cherry Pie fans, together we'll take big hair music back to the top, where it belongs. Until next time Madison... John |
