While the stage at the spacious Dinero's last week was probably the biggest we'd ever played on, the stage at O'Brien's was certainly the smallest (and oddly shaped). While much of our staging and theatrics were compromised by the close quarters we did our best not to let it cramp our style. Once the show started we loosened up quickly and had a rockin' good time. While there were probably no more than a hundred people there at any one time, the small size of the room helped create a cozy intimacy with the folks who had come in from the falling snow to catch the show. Matt Miller and Adam Henry of the Chris Aaron Band were in attendance with a few friends. Also enjoying the show (they told us so) were Amber Otter, Tammy Genthe, Michele Honadel, Lynn Zandt, Dawn & Brian and Erin & Greg. Some extra flavor was added to the evening by an older gentleman (well, more like a crazy old coot) who did a one-man dance in front of the stage during parts of the first two sets and made awkward conversation with John (while John was trying to put on a show). He spoke with me during the first break and I couldn't understand a word he was saying. He was actually pretty entertaining in an odd way, but at times seemed to be scaring people off of the dance floor. During the second break a group of women pestered us to play a Kiss song that we haven't played in quite a while. I was hoping that we could pull it off but John said that he had completely forgotten the words (despite being the biggest Kiss fan in the group). We promised that we'd have it prepared for the next time we were in town. For many of us the highlight of the evening came in the third set when Shane honored John's upcoming birthday with a "Marilyn Monroe-Style" rendition of "Happy Birthday". It was a hilarious. -Josh |
